Every few years fashion rediscovers the oversized blazer and sells it as new. The fall 2026 version is everywhere, and like most recycled trends it has a right way and a wrong way. Grade: B+, with the plus entirely dependent on fit discipline.

## What the trend actually is

Longer line, dropped shoulder, room through the body, usually single-breasted with a soft lapel. The good versions are cut oversized on purpose: volume in the body, but the shoulder seam still lands close to your actual shoulder and the sleeve ends at the wrist bone. The bad versions are just a size too big, which reads as borrowed, not styled.

## Why it works when it works

Volume on top slims everything below it. An oversized blazer over straight trousers or a column skirt gives you a long, unbroken line with one deliberate contrast. It also layers over real knits, which makes it one of the few trends that survives actual weather.

## Where it loses points

Proportion is unforgiving. Petite frames get swallowed unless the length is cropped or the sleeves are pushed and tailored. Pairing it with wide-leg everything erases the silhouette entirely; the volume needs a slim counterweight somewhere. And cheap versions collapse at the shoulder, which kills the whole effect.

## The grade and how to earn it

B+: a genuinely useful trend with a real failure mode. Buy for shoulder fit first, keep the bottom half narrow, and have the sleeves shortened if needed. Done that way it is an A-minus piece. Bought two sizes up off the rack, it is a C.
