Every season arrives with a dozen 'must-haves'; about two survive eighteen months. Here are this fall's loudest trends, graded on the three axes that matter: how long they will look current, how much of your existing wardrobe they work with, and what it costs to find out.

## Barn and field jackets: BUY

Grade: A. The waxed-canvas workwear jacket has cycled through fashion every decade since the 1980s; this wave is a return, not an invention. It layers over everything, reads better with age, and the secondhand market is deep - the cost of entry can be under $80 for a vintage one that beats new. Longevity: effectively permanent in a casual wardrobe.

## Barrel and horseshoe legs: TRY

Grade: B-. The curved-leg trouser is the interesting silhouette of the season, but it is a silhouette trend - those date faster than fabric or color trends. Try it cheap and secondhand; if it works with your proportions, it earns a mid-tier buy. Do not build around it.

## Burgundy as the season's neutral: BUY (at accessory level)

Grade: B+. Oxblood, merlot, burgundy - the color is everywhere because it genuinely functions as a neutral against navy, gray, camel, and black. The smart entry is leather goods and knits, which you will wear for years; the expensive coat in burgundy is the version you may not love in 2028. Buy the sweater, the loafer, the bag; rent the statement coat.

## Skinny scarves: SKIP

Grade: D. A micro-trend with a short runway. The skinny scarf reads as a reference rather than a garment, and it will read as 'fall 2026' by spring. If the look appeals, a silk square worn loose does the same job with a ten-year shelf life.

## Suede everything: TRY

Grade: B. Suede jackets and bags are having a moment, but suede is a maintenance relationship, not a purchase - rain spots, collar shine, and a cleaning bill are part of ownership. Try it in a bag or shoes first; the jacket is for people who already know they will care for it.

## The grading rule that survives every season

Buy fabric and color trends (they age slowly), try silhouette trends cheaply (they date fast), and skip micro-accessories (they date fastest). Grades follow that order every single season.
