What counts as an investment piece in fashion?
An item with 5+ years of realistic wear and timeless design: coats, leather goods, shoes, tailoring - never trend items.
The word gets abused by marketing ('invest in this season's must-have' is a contradiction). A real investment piece passes three tests. Design permanence: the item looked essentially the same 20 years ago - trench coats, loafers, a navy blazer, a leather tote. Wear frequency: it serves a weekly-or-more slot in your life, not an annual one. Construction ceiling: the quality version is meaningfully better made than the cheap one, so the extra money buys real years. Categories that pass: outerwear, leather shoes and bags, tailoring, fine knits. Categories that fail: anything trend-shaped, logos with expiration dates, and delicate occasion pieces. One more test: can it be repaired? Resoleable shoes and relineable coats are investments because the repair extends the life the price paid for.
